The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Richard Dean Lee, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing, in action at Thai Nguyen, North Vietnam, on 20 June 1967. On that date, Captain Lee led a force of sixteen F-105 Thunderchiefs against one of the most heavily defended targets in the history of aerial warfare. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, captain Lee aggressively attacked the target while being subjected to intense antiaircraft fire. His superior and courageous attack caused immeasurable disruption of a vital transportation network. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Lee has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
