The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph Digiacco, Jr. (ASN: RA-12285244), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. Near Majon-Ni, Korea, on 21 November 1950, Corporal Digiacco was a radio repairman accompanying a convoy on a combat patrol when the patrol was ambushed. Corporal Digiacco immediately took up a firing position near a jeep mounted .50 caliber machine gun to provide protection for the gunner. Constantly exposed to heavy automatic fire, and with no thought of his own personal safety, he moved to successive positions around the jeep to fire on the enemy to the flank and the rear. In the initial exchange of fire Corporal Digiacco was wounded several times, but remained at his position, until he eventually was forced to withdraw. Corporal Digiacco’s spirit of determination and utter disregard for his own safety in the face of enemy fire inspired the other members of the convoy to accomplishments beyond their normal capabilities. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Digiacco on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
