The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Arnold Dietz (ASN: RA-16294425), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 21 September 1950, in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea, On that date, Private Dietz was a member of a machine gun section attached to a rifle company during an attack against Hill 280. During the assault his section was subjected to intense hostile enfilading fire and suffered numerous casualties. Although he had been wounded twice he administered first aid to his wounded comrades and then continued to man his machine gun until it was destroyed by enemy fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety he then moved through the fire-swept area, continuing to render first aid to his wounded comrades, refusing to be evacuated. Only when he collapsed from theirloss of blood and shock from his painful wounds was he evacuated. Private Dietz’s gallantry and selfless concern for his comrades reflect great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
