The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) James T. Dickson (ASN: 0-1178457), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 89th Medium Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 26 September 1950, Lieutenant Dickson piloted an unarmed aircraft over enemy territory to provide reconnaissance information for a task force which was attacking in the vicinity of Janjon-ni, Korea. Flying at an extremely low altitude, constantly subjected to anti-aircraft fire, he reconnoitered the route of advance to provide timely information on enemy strength and dispositions. Although his plane was damaged by hostile fire, he made repeated passes over a bridge to determine whether it could accommodate heavy vehicles. When strong enemy forces threatened to disrupt the advance of the task force, he directed fighter aircraft into the target area. He continued to provide effective support for the task force until his supply of fuel was depleted. Lieutenant Dickson’s courage, military skill and unremitting devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
