The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jose M. Diaz (ASN: US-51069745), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, Company G had the mission of taking and holding Hill 400, near Chorwon, Korea. Strong enemy opposition however, halted the unit’s attack and the order for a bayonet assault was given. Realizing the necessity of all the supporting fire that could be rendered, Sergeant Diaz stripped his machine gun off its tripod and wrapping the barrel in a towel to prevent the burning of his hands, moved forward in the assault, supporting the weapon against his hip and delivering a lethal hail of fire upon the foe. Although he became a primary target for the enemy, he escaped injury and continued steadily up the hill, so confusing the hostile soldiers that the company was able to storm the emplacements and seize its objective. The unwavering gallantry and courage exhibited by Sergeant Diaz reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
