Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 582 (October 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private John Francis Dewey (ASN: US-55122017), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date Private Dewey led his squad on a patrol deep into enemy territory. Upon reaching their objective, they gathered important data concerning the disposition of enemy troops before drawing heavy enemy fire. Having to withdraw, Private Dewey voluntarily remained behind and fought a rear guard action while his squad withdrew to friendly lines. Private Dewey remained in his position inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy until fatally wounded by enemy fire. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing devotion to comrades displayed by Private Dewey on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
