The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Howard L. Dew, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 1 August 1943. During combat operations Sergeant Dew, acting platoon sergeant, was seriously injured in his left side by an enemy hand grenade. Despite his wound he continued forward aggressively for the next hour, at which time he became so weak from loss of blood that he was ordered to the rear. Declining assistance, he made his way alone back to the battalion aid statin. Sergeant Dew’s exemplary action, personal courage and devotion to duty under fire while wounded inspired his men with the desire to redouble their efforts, which led to an early reduction of an enemy strongpoint. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
