The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) David J. DeVries (ASN: 0-2209743), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant DeVries’ mission was to take his platoon of tanks to the top of Hill 266, more commonly known as “Old Baldy”, and support an Infantry unit attempting to secure the hill. He led his platoon across extremely dangerous terrain, through mine fields and enemy artillery fire and up the steep slopes of the hill. Upon reaching the top of the hill he was unable to contact the Infantry unit commander by radio. With complete disregard for personal safety, Lieutenant DeVries fearlessly left the cover of his tank and moved alone through a hail of enemy mortar fire to a friendly bunker and ascertained where his supporting fire was most needed. Returning through the devastating enemy fire to his tank, he remained exposed in the hatch, directing the fire of his platoon with outstanding success, demolishing at least seven enemy bunkers and causing many enemy casualties. Despite two painful wounds inflicted by mortar rounds which landed on or near the tank, he held his position, withdrawing only after his ammunition was expended. The heroic actions and consummate devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant DeVries reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
