The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jack T. Deveau (ASN: 0-1340750), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 September 1951 in the vicinity of Samtae-dong, Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Deveau noticed that a friendly unit, which had the mission of attacking and securing an enemy-held hill, was in grave need of supporting fire. He voluntarily accepted the responsibility of setting up a base of fire for the unit. Lieutenant Deveau, with complete disregard for his personal safety, continually remained in an exposed position to direct and control effective supporting fire of his men. Although under constant enemy artillery and mortar fire, the unit under Lieutenant Deveau’s capable direction was able to return a heavy volume of counter fire. As a result, friendly assaulting elements were able to accomplish their mission successfully with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Deveau on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
