The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] William J. Desalvo (ASN: 0-1301270), United States Army, for gallantry in action in Italy from 22 December 1943 to 8 October 1944. Captain Desalvo played an important part in devising and experimenting at the peril of his life, a new technique of infiltration of agents into enemy lines. He prepared and performed such infiltrations by means of daily patrols into no man’s land, across the most difficult terrain and under the worst weather conditions and deserves much praise for his conduct during nerve-wracking experiences under enemy fire, and for the prudence and skill he displayed to insure the safety of his companions and the success of his missions. His judgment and leadership reflect great credit upon himself and contributed to the success of intelligence operations which materially helped the FIFTH Army’s advance on the Italian Peninsula. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Desalvo, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
