    Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 552 (December 5, 1951), Amended by G. O. No. 232 (1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry), [then Major] Clarence C. DeReus (ASN: 0-35790), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 11 September 1951, near Hwaji-ri, Korea, the 3d Battalion of the 7th Infantry was attacking Hill 396 in a probing operation to determine hostile strength and position. As the attack moved toward the objective, Company K made close contact with strong enemy positions and sustained numerous casualties from the missiles showered upon them. Colonel De Reus, leaving his observation post and moving to K Company’s area, observed the men falling back and dangerously near confusion. Rapidly reorganizing the company, he started it forward again, at the same time providing for evacuation of the wounded; this action relieved the pressure on the left flank held by Company I. Proceeding through the intense fire to the supporting heavy tank company, he redeployed the vehicles and directed their fire with great effectiveness. The gallantry, superior leadership, and cool judgment under heavy fire displayed by Colonel De Reus reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
