The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) John V. Denise (ASN: 0-1106089), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 234th Engineer Combat Battalion, NINTH U.S. Army, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945. The area in which Captain Denise and his men were constructing a bridge across the Rhine River, Germany, was subjected to intermittent shelling by enemy artillery. Observing a seriously wounded soldier lying in an exposed position, Captain Denise, realizing the personal danger involved, brave the enemy fire and rescued him so that he could be evacuated. After each barrage, Captain Denise reorganized his men and continued construction. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Denise, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
