The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Anthony J. DeMarie (ASN: ER-12248320), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 20 May 1951 in the vicinity of Hwadong, Korea. On that day Company D was fighting a delaying action against the enemy on Hill 504. During the hours of darkness the enemy made a probing attack on the company. Sergeant DeMarie, a machine gun section leader, ordered his men to remain quiet and not to fire until told to do so. At daybreak he observed the fanatical enemy approaching under cover of heavy machine gun and mortar fire, driving the machine gun section from its position. Without hesitation and with utter disregard for his own safety, Sergeant DeMarie heroically placed a machine gun in the only available position. Completely exposing himself to the treacherous enemy fire, he calmly and accurately fired his machine gun, wiping out one entire enemy machine gun crew of nine men, and killing and wounding a great number of the enemy. This gave the remainder of his section time to assemble and rout the entire enemy force, inflicting approximately 500 casualties. The gallantry in action and coolness under fire displayed by Sergeant DeMarie reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.

DeMarie (ASN: ER-12248320), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 September 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date Sergeant DeMarie was assigned to Company A which had the mission of defending a vital hill against an enemy attack. When a numerically superior enemy force assaulted the position, Sergeant DeMarie, a machine gun section leader, immediately coordinated the fire of his weapons to repulse the onrushing hostile force. Exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, he moved about his section checking operation of weapons and offering directions and words of encouragement. During the ensuing action, Sergeant DeMarie personally operated a machine gun and delivered accurate and effective fire, resulting in numerous enemy casualties. His outstanding devotion to duty and leadership were instrumental in repulsing the enemy attack. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant DeMarie on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 361 (July 25, 1951)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Master Sergeant Anthony J. DeMarie (ASN: ER-12248320), United States Army, for heroic achievement on 12 May 1951 in the vicinity of Sagol, Korea. On that day the first section of the machine gun platoon of Company D, of which Sergeant DeMarie was section leader, was attached to Company B. Its mission was to attack the enemy on Hill 699. While Sergeant DeMarie was placing his machine guns into position, an enemy machine gun opened fire on the position of the first squad. Two men were immediately hit by the enemy fire. With utter disregard for his own safety, Sergeant DeMarie braved the hail of enemy machine gun and small arms fire to pull the two wounded men below the ridgeline and administer first aid. Later in the day while the balance of the company was pinned down by enemy fire and no cover was available for protection, Sergeant DeMarie placed his machine gun in such a position as to bring effective fire on the enemy. This gave the section and elements of Company B an opportunity to return fire upon the enemy. The heroic actions and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant DeMarie reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
