The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Theodore Ralph Delplain (ASN: 0-1323230), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 and 28 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kuchang-dong, Korea. On the night of 27 November 1950 the company, of which he was acting as commanding officer, was occupying defensive positions on a hill on the right flank of the regiment. During the night a strong enemy force made a determined attack on the company’s defensive positions. Under Lieutenant Delplain’s aggressive leadership, the company repelled the first attack. When the enemy attacked a second time, they succeeded in separating the enemy into small units and forced most of these units to withdraw from the hill. Lieutenant Delplain led his group to the east end of the hill and made a determined stand throughout the night. On the morning of 28 November 1950 the enemy made repeated efforts, in great strength, to drive this group from the top of the hill. During this entire action he constantly exposed himself to extremely heavy enemy fire and was a source of tremendous inspiration to all of his men. His complete disregard for his own safety gave his men the inspiration and an example of courage that enabled them to resist the fierce enemy attacks, and thereby materially assisted the counterattack that was subsequently launched by his battalion. The outstanding gallantry and inspiring leadership of Lieutenant Delplain reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
