The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Emil A. Del Guidice (ASN: 36669543), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, on 25 April 1944, near the Army Air Field at Santa Maria, California. On that date an Army airplane crashed and caught fire. Flames were beginning to envelop the plane, and there was imminent danger of explosion of the gasoline tanks. At the risk of his life, Corporal Del Guidice jumped onto the broken wing, tore open the canopy and assisted in removing the dazed and helpless pilot from the cockpit and in carrying him to safety. The heroism displayed by Corporal Del Guidice on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
