Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 13 (January 10, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Bill Dwane DeHart (ASN: US-19295355), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 6 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandeau-san, Korea. On this date Private Dehart’s squad was counterattacked by a superior and fanatical hostile unit and was forced to withdraw. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Dehart volunteered to remain in his position and engage the enemy while his squad withdrew and set up new defensive position. Despite the close proximity of the enemy soldiers and their intense small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, he remained in his position and continued to inflict numerous casualties upon the enemy. While fearlessly repelling the hostile forces, Private Dehart was mortally wounded by an enemy grenade. Through his dauntless courage and self-sacrificing devotion to duty his comrades were able to set up a defensive perimeter and successfully maintain their positions. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Dehart reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
