The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George D. DeHaas (ASN: 0-1341859), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division in action against an armed enemy on 22 August 1950 in the vicinity of Taegu, Korea. On that date the rifle platoon commanded by Lieutenant DeHaas was subjected to a surprise attack by a numerically superior enemy force. Although he was wounded at the beginning of the action, he refused medical attention and moved forward to engage the enemy with only two of his men. By this action he enabled his platoon to deploy and to fire on the attacking enemy. After succeeding in containing the enemy assault, he immediately launched a counterattack which created panic in the enemy ranks and caused a disorderly withdrawal with many of their wounded being left on the field. He continued to lead the attack even though he had lost considerable blood and was in great pain. The gallant leadership displayed by Lieutenant DeHaas in exposing himself to heavy enemy fire in order to lead a charge against a numerically superior enemy was an inspiration to his men and reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
