The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Larry T. Reed (ASN: US-54442244), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Reed distinguished himself by valorous actions on 1 November 1968 while serving as a Rifleman with Company B, 3d Battalion, 60th Infantry, on the U.S.S. WESTCHESTER COUNTY. When the ship was hit by an exploding mine and one of the compartments began to fill, Specialist Reed was helping men out of the flooding area when he heard screams for help. Totally disregarding his own safety, Specialist Reed swam through water-filled chambers and released two men from a flooding room. Specialist Reed’s actions were responsible for the saving of his comrades’ lives. Specialist Fourth Class Reed’s heroic actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
