Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 115 (1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Jack L. Dean (ASN: RA-17285030), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action near Chup-a’ri, Korea. On 3 September 1951, a numerically superior enemy force attacked the defensive positions of Company I and penetrated to within close proximity of the command post. Immediately, a counterattack was launched by the friendly forces. Sergeant Dean, in command of the assault squad of the third platoon, led his men in a furious attack and neutralized an enemy trench, personally killing three enemy soldiers and wounding twelve. While consolidating the newly gained positions, Sergeant Dean found that the ammunition supply of his squad was depleted. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he exposed himself to the concentrated enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire and obtained an additional supply of ammunition. Repeating this process several times, he completely re-supplied his squad. Subsequently, the enemy attacked again, but through the courageous and intrepid leadership of Sergeant Dean, the attacking force was routed with heavy casualties. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Dean reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
