Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 461 (August 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Warrant Officer Junior Grade] Willie A. Davis (ASN: 0-2262404/W-2141247), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 517th Military Police Company, [then a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division], in action against an armed enemy on 18 September 1950, in the vicinity of Pohang Dong, Korea. On this day Company L was given the mission of attacking and securing Hill 201 in the vicinity of the Naktong River. After the company had jumped off into the attack it was slowed down by enemy mortar and small arms fire. When the commanding officer was wounded in the attack, his company became disorganized. Realizing the situation, Lieutenant Davis, a platoon leader, moved forward under enemy fire to the command post and organized the company and led them forward to their objective. While leading his men, Lieutenant Davis was lightly wounded, but refused to be evacuated until the objective had been secured and his men placed in a defensive position. Lieutenant Davis’ outstanding leadership and initiative in assuming command were highly inspirational to his men. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Davis reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
