The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant (MC) Frederick Raymond Hook, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism while serving as Assistant Surgeon with the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near St. Etienne, France, October 4 – 6, 1918. Lieutenant Hook established an advance dressing station in an exposed position under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. He worked fearlessly and unceasingly, giving first aid to the wounded and directing their evacuation, until ordered to move to the rear.
