Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 364 (December 17, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Julius J. Davis (ASN: US-54061551), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On the night of 12 August 1952, Private Davis was a member of a squad from Company L, 3d Battalion, assigned the mission of assaulting an enemy fortification in the vicinity of Chokko-ri, Korea, and capturing a prisoner for intelligence purposes. As the friendly unit neared its objective, it suddenly encountered intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and grenade fire. Realizing that the well-entrenched foe had the advantage of fire power and was inflicting heavy casualties upon the friendly squad, Private Davis unhesitatingly dashed through the fierce enemy fire to a position from where he hurled grenades and placed an intense and accurate volume of rifle fire upon the enemy, inflicting numerous casualties among them and causing them to become disorganized. Seeing that his squad leader lay wounded in an exposed position, he immediately and with complete disregard for his personal safety, ignored the murderous hostile fire, advanced across the fire-swept terrain, and personally evacuated the wounded man to a position of comparative safety. Returning to the scene of conflict, he again subjected the foe to rapid, accurate, and devastating fire, allowing the friendly unit to evacuate the casualties as it withdrew. Private Davis’ intrepidity and selfless actions were instrumental in saving the life of one of his fellow soldiers and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
