Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 355 (October 5, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Chester P. Davis (ASN: 0-1321376), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 January 1952 in the vicinity of Ponggil-li, North Korea. On that date, Captain Davis was leading L Company in an attack on strongly fortified enemy positions located on Hill 472. The enemy loosed a deluge of small arms, automatic weapons, mortars, and artillery fire on the men, slowing their advance. Captain Davis, with complete disregard for personal safety, sensing that panic was spreading among his men and that the entire company was in danger of annihilation, leaped to his feet, reorganized the scattered elements and led an assault on the hostile emplacements which inflicted many casualties upon the enemy and forced them to retreat, thereby winning the objective. The gallantry displayed by Captain Davis is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
