The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Roy L. Davenport (ASN: 0-2212058), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changyong, Korea. On this date the enemy launched repeated assaults on our defensive positions with their main effort directed at ground held by the platoon commanded by Lieutenant Davenport. The enemy attacks were the spearhead of a major offensive with the objective of throwing forces astride our main supply route and overrunning regimental command posts. Aware of the critical situation and the necessity of holding his position at all costs, Lieutenant Davenport throughout the early morning hours expertly shifted his depleted unit so as to meet and repulse the hostile assaults from the most advantageous firing positions. In so doing he repeatedly exposed himself to the intense enemy automatic weapons, small arms and grenade fire. His skillful deployment of his troops and his effective use of the fire power available to him resulted in blunting the enemy’s drive and forcing them to withdraw, leaving one hundred dead on the field. The gallantry and inspiring leadership displayed by Lieutenant Davenport on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the finest traditions of the military service.
