The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank Davenport (ASN: ER-36794776), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 September 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Private Davenport was an ammunition bearer for a unit which was providing supporting fire for friendly elements assaulting a heavily fortified enemy-held hill. During this action he observed that the crew of one of the machine guns had become casualties. Realizing the importance of the weapon’s fire power, Private Davenport unhesitatingly advanced over the fire-swept area to the machine gun emplacement and immediately operated it. Although under direct hostile observation and fire, he delivered devastating counter fire on the hostile forces, inflicting numerous casualties upon them. His initiative and coolness under the intense enemy fire were an inspiration to all who observed him, and were highly instrumental in the success of his unit in this operation. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Davenport on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
