The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Henry Force Daniels (ASN: 0-23295), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 21 September to 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Suim-myon, Korea. On these dates he was commanding an infantry unit whose mission was to attack and secure Hills 851 and 931, the principal concentrations of enemy strength in the battle of “Heartbreak Ridge”. Colonel Daniels assumed command of the unit after it had suffered extremely heavy losses in unsuccessful assaults. Through his determined and aggressive leadership friendly forces were able to break through the final defense on Hill 931 in a night attack of unexcelled ferocity. He lived with his troops throughout the campaign, guiding, coordinating and inspiring them to greater efforts and into final victory. The gallantry and selfless devotion to the welfare of his men displayed by Colonel Daniels on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
