Headquarters, United States Army, Vietnam, General Orders No. 2618 (September 9, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Raymond Lee Robinson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the U. S. Army Vietnam Training Advisory Group, United States Army Vietnam Training Support Headquarters, in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Robinson distinguished himself while serving as leader of a reconnaissance team on patrol in enemy-infested territory. Within minutes after insertion, a numerically superior enemy force surrounded the team and engaged it with heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire. Although in a relatively exposed position, Sergeant Robinson quickly organized a defensive perimeter to ward off assaults as the enemy attempted to overrun the team’s position. He repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire to direct the team in returning heavy volumes of fire and to coordinate airstrikes on the foe. When he saw two enemy soldiers infiltrate the team’s position, Sergeant Robinson disregarded his own safety and stood up amid intense hostile fire as he unleashed a deadly burst of fire at the two enemy troops, killing both of them. He continued to direct the defense, warding off repeated enemy assaults, until the team was extracted by helicopter. Staff Sergeant Robinson’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
