Headquarters, II Field Force, Vietnam, General Orders No. 3104 (July 30, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Armor) Bobby F. Griffin, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 21 June 1970 while serving as squadron commander with the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Colonel Griffin received a message that one of his elements was under an indirect fire and ground attack at its night defensive position. Without hesitation, Colonel Griffin instructed his pilot to make several low level passes over the enemy positions. Even though his graft was receiving antiaircraft fire he continued with the passes, and at one point, Colonel Griffin engaged and eliminated several enemy soldiers with his individual weapon. Through his heroic actions the enemy force was routed and contact broke. Lieutenant Colonel Griffin’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
