Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 167 (May 2, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Victor P. Dalmas (ASN: 0-445785), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 16 January 1952, Lieutenant Dalmas, Executive Officer of Company K, 3d Battalion, voluntarily led the assault platoon in a company attack on enemy-held Hill 317, near Kyaphare-Sanmol, Korea. After having thoroughly prepared and familiarized his men as to their assignment, he led them to the assembly area. Deploying the machine-guns to the flanks for maximum protection, he then placed himself at the front of his men and led them up the hill. After having advanced to within 50 yards of the top of the hill with no resistance encountered, Lieutenant Dalmas halted the platoon and went forward alone to make a check of the area. Locating the enemy positions, he gave the men a signal to begin the assault. Despite the withering hail of hostile mortar, small-arms and grenade fire that now pervaded the area, Lieutenant Dalmas fearlessly remained at the front of his men, shouting words of encouragement and directing their fire at the enemy positions. After the friendly force reached its objective, he reorganized his platoon and ordered it to withdraw while he remained behind to search the area for any personnel that might have been left on the hill. Lieutenant Dalmas’ outstanding gallantry and inspirational leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
