The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Bertram J. Dallas (ASN: 0-1294097), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 November 1950 and 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Samin-dong, Korea. On the night of 25 November 1950 Captain Dallas’ company was in support of a rifle battalion which was being subjected to a major attack by numerically superior enemy forces. Then the infantry and supporting artillery battalion were overrun and compelled to withdraw under heavy mortar and small arms fire, Captain Dallas courageously covered this withdrawal by maintaining mortar positions on the military crest of the hill, personally directing the fire of his mortars with such accuracy that the advance of the enemy was delayed until the infantry could assume new defensive positions. Thereupon, he organized his company for a withdrawal, including its vehicles and equipment, and remained in the evacuated area despite the fierce enemy fire to assure the safe withdrawal of all personnel. At daybreak he led a patrol forward to the old mortar positions which by then were in the immediate proximity of the enemy and, heedless of the constant enemy small arms fire falling in the area, directed the recovery of all remaining vehicles and equipment that had not been destroyed by enemy action. His devotion to duty and outstanding leadership were responsible for the orderly withdrawal of the rifle troops and effected the saving of many vital arms and much equipment. The gallantry displayed by Captain Dallas reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
