The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer Junior Grade Richard L. Dalke (ASN: W-2141243), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 and 29 November 1950, near Hagaru-ri, Korea, Warrant Officer Dalke was placed in command of a platoon with the mission of protecting his company rear. Under intense enemy fire, to which he fearlessly exposed himself, Warrant Officer Dalke skillfully maneuvered his men in securing the company’s rear from attack and, later, to prevent a flanking movement by the enemy. During the attack, in which his platoon also covered a platoon engaged in establishing new positions, his skill and courage inspired his men to hold their position, contributing materially to the successful execution of the company’s mission of holding a strategic hill. Warrant Officer Dalke’s heroic actions on this occasion reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
