The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] John Norman Dale (ASN: 0-61501), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 December 1950, in the vicinity of Kuksu-ri, Korea, the 2d battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, was forced to withdraw in order to prevent being surrounded by a large enemy force. Lieutenant Dale, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, repeatedly exposed himself to enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire in order to supervise the withdrawal of the battalion. His sound tactical judgment, initiative and aggressiveness inspired his men and were responsible for the saving of many lives. Lieutenant Dale’s courage and exemplary leadership reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
