The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ralph T. Dabbs (ASN: 065244), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 30 January 1951, Lieutenant Dabbs’ machine gun platoon was supporting the assault of Company L on Hill 222 near Yongin, Korea. During the assault the machine gun positions were subjected to heavy hostile small arms fire, which wounded four and forced the remainder of the friendly troops to seek cover. Realizing the importance of keeping the machine guns in operation, Lieutenant Dabbs calmly moved about under the intense hail of enemy fire, reorganized the gun squads, and directed a steady stream of fire on the enemy positions, thereby enabling the rifle company to secure its objective. Immediately after the objective was taken, the enemy launched a strong counterattack. Lieutenant Dabbs, seeing that one of his gunners was wounded, dashed across the open terrain to the machine gun and personally placed it back into operation. While thus engaged, Lieutenant Dabbs was seriously wounded by small arms fire. At all times during this action the outstanding gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Dabbs was an inspiration to his men and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
