The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Eugene Curtis (ASN: RA-14217934), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 90th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in Korea. When, near Pongam-ni, Korea, on 11 August 1950, the battery position was attacked by numerically superior enemy forces of infantry supported by tanks, Sergeant Curtis left his defensive position and moved forward under intense enemy fire and evacuated the wounded over a quarter mile of exposed road. Despite the fact that enemy forces had penetrated the Battery area and were sending heavy fire from adjacent high ground, Sergeant Curtis, without regard for his personal safety, made repeated trips in a vehicle across terrain exposed to enemy mortar and small arms fire transporting the seriously wounded to the aid station. Sergeant Curtis’ courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
