The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Daniel V. Curtin (ASN: RA-12264105), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company f, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 March 1951 in the vicinity of Soksil-li, Korea. His platoon was assaulting a high knoll from which a strongly fortified enemy had been blocking the company’s general advance. As the platoon advanced up the steep slope, it was met by heavy fire from two cleverly concealed enemy positions which halted further progress. Artillery and mortar fire brought to bear on the enemy failed to dislodge him or silence his devastating fire. Realizing that excessive casualties could be avoided only by overcoming the opposition without delay, Private Curtin rushed from his position of cover and, fully exposed, charged the enemy with hand grenades. After stunning the enemy with the grenades, he closed with them and killed them with rifle fire. Inspired by this example of heroism, which silenced the hostile fire at that point, the platoon quickly rallied and secured its objective, thus permitting the resumption of the general advance. The gallantry displayed by Private Curtin reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
