Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 322 (1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Scotty J. Cummings, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Chorwon, Korea, on 17 April 1953. On that date, Second Lieutenant Cummings and his platoon were ordered to counter-attack a strategic outpost that had just been taken by the enemy. Although Second Lieutenant Cummings was not familiar with the terrain, he moved his platoon into the assault position swiftly and in good order. Moving up the side of the fire-swept slope, Second Lieutenant Cummings, although encountering heavy enemy grenade and small arms fire moved into the trenches and started to clear the enemy-held bunkers. Although wounded, Second Lieutenant Cummings continued to lead his men in silencing the enemy snipers that were causing heavy friendly casualties. After the hill had been secured Second Lieutenant Cummings was again wounded as he set his men into defensive positions. He refused to be evacuated until he was assured that the more seriously wounded had already been taken care of. Second Lieutenant Cummings’ complete disregard for his own personal safety and his heroism in the face of intense enemy fire served as an inspiration to his men. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Cummings reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
