Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 6 (January 7, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Martin Cummings (ASN: RA-15246386), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Won-ni, Korea. On that date Corporal Cummings was a member of a division convoy that was proceeding from Won-ni to Sunchon. The convoy was suddenly subjected to intense machine gun and automatic weapons fire from a large enemy force which was well-entrenched on commanding ground on both sides of the road. The heavy hostile fire caused numerous casualties and forced the convoy to halt and its members to take cover in ditches along the road. Moving fearlessly through the intense fire sweeping the road, Corporal Cummings gathered a group of his comrades and led an assault against the enemy positions. As he reached the crest of the slope he ran into an enemy machine gun which was about to open fire. At point blank range he killed the crew members with rifle fire and then continued to lead his men in their assault, knocking out several automatic weapons and killing numerous enemy soldiers. After all resistance was eliminated he aided two of his wounded comrades to safety. His intrepidity under fire was instrumental in eliminating the enemy roadblock and permitting the convoy to proceed in safety without sustaining more severe casualties. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Corporal Cummings reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
