The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John Paul Cumbelich (ASN: US-56054014), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Tally’ong, Korea. On this date Company E had advanced well up the slope of an enemy-held hill when it learned that the supply of ammunition was running low. The entire route of advance was hampered by the intense small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire from heavily fortified hostile installations. With his unit momentarily pinned down, Private Cumbelich, realizing the seriousness of the situation, volunteered to return to the rear area for more ammunition. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he began the treacherous downward journey. Over the entire route, enemy snipers harassed him at every move and machine gun fire swept the area but, despite the fact, Private Cumbelich made repeated trips re-supplying his unit with the much needed ammunition. His comrades asked him to rest, but he only commented that they were doing the fighting and he, a minor job of carrying supplies. With those humble words, Private Cumbelich made his last trip. A mortar round landed nearby, mortally wounding him. Through his unyielding efforts and determination, the men of his company were able to secure their objective. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Cumbelich reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
