The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George R. Cullum (ASN: RA-15409335), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 27 November 1950, near Ipsok, Korea, Corporal Cullum’s company was heavily engaged by a numerically superior hostile force. Advancing through an intense concentration of automatic weapons, mortar and artillery fire, he guided his machine gun squad to an advantageous position and halted the enemy assault with a heavy volume of effective fire. After the machine gun had been disabled and the squad leader wounded, he immediately secured another weapon, reorganized the squad and delivered over three thousand rounds of ammunition in the successful defense of his position. Corporal Cullum’s courageous leadership, determination and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
