The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ralleigh Dwaine Cullison, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in Korea. On 4 April 1951, while advancing on a commanding hill near Chudong-ni, Korea, Corporal Cullison’s unit encountered heavy resistance from a strong hostile force. Although wounded at the beginning of the engagement, he moved his machine gun to an exposed vantage point to direct more effective fire at the onrushing foe. When his weapon developed a malfunction, he continued to fire single shots at the encircling enemy until he lapsed into unconsciousness from his wounds. Corporal Cullison’s valorous initiative and unwavering devotion to duty were instrumental in repelling the attack and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the American Soldier.
