The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Jack J. Csepp (ASN: US-55107035), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Medical Company, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, near Kumsong, Korea, on 18 October 1951. As a rifle platoon attacked an objective, it was subjected to intense enemy crossfire. The friendly troops quickly took cover but three of the men fell wounded in exposed positions, Corporal Csepp, a Medical Aidman attached to the unit, immediately left his position of safety and raced to the aid of the wounded men. Heedless of the murderous enemy fire, he treated the wounded soldiers and proceeded to evacuate them. As he was carrying the second man to safety, he was wounded in the leg by enemy automatic weapons fire. Nevertheless, he brought the man to cover and, refusing treatment for his own wound, went back into the enemy fire for the last soldier. Not until this man had been evacuated did he consent to have his own wound treated. Corporal Csepp’s courageous action, fearless initiative and selfless devotion to his comrades saved lives which might otherwise have been lost and reflect the greatest credit on himself and the United States Army Medical Service.
