War Department, General Orders No. 60 (1947)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Vicente S. Cruz (SN: 037673), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 103d Infantry Regiment, Philippine Army, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands. First Lieutenant Cruz displayed gallantry in action against the enemy on the night of 7 May 1942. Lieutenant Cruz volunteered for an important mission. Armed only with a crudely made hand grenade, he crept up to an enemy position, demolished the .75-mm/ artillery pieces and inflicted many casualties to the crew. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
