The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Master Sergeant Robert E. Crowley (ASN: RA-20120799), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 June 1951, near Harang-dong, Korea, Company B was pinned down by an extremely heavy hostile mortar barrage while assaulting enemy-held Hill 687. Sergeant Crowley, realizing the danger of panic among the men, left his position of comparative safety and moved through the platoon areas, encouraging and reorganizing the men. Although knocked to the ground on several occasions by the concussion of nearby bursting mortar shells, he continued to expose himself as he reorganized the squads where necessary and, in addition, administered first aid to the wounded. The heroic initiative displayed by Sergeant Crowley reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 454 (October 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Robert E. Crowley (ASN: RA-20120799), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 July 1951, two of B Company’s platoons were engaged in an attack on Hill 586 near Chich-on, Korea, when a furious barrage of enemy grenades temporarily halted their advance. Seeing the units’ predicament, Sergeant Crowley voluntarily supervised the reserve platoon in a flanking maneuver upon the enemy positions. While under the withering hostile fire, he fearlessly led the platoon forward, pouring fire into the entrenchments and so engaging the enemy that his grenade barrage lessened allowing the other platoons to continue their action. As he was moving forward in the attack, Sergeant Crowley, spotting a grenade-throwing enemy soldier, dashed over the exposed ground and pinning down his adversary with the fire of his carbine, closed with him in close quarter combat and killed him. He then rallied his force and led it in the final successful assault on the objective. Sergeant Crowley’s gallant leadership and personal courage reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
