The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Dennis M. Crowden (ASN: 34016835), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, at Camp Pickett, Virginia, on 5 January 1944. On that date, a live grenade fell in a slit trench occupied by a soldier. Sergeant Crowden, at the risk of his life, left the protection of his foxhole, sheltered the soldier with his own body and pulled him to safety just as the grenade exploded.
