The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Rego Grosse (ASN: RA-13010694), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Tank Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 8 June 1951, near Simp’-on-dong, Korea, Sergeant Grosse’s platoon was moving down a narrow mountain road to support an attack on the enemy by infantry elements. As the column was traveling along, Sergeant Grosse’s tank struck a mine which exploded so strongly that the vehicle caught on fire, causing several rounds of ammunition to blow up within the tank. Sergeant Grosse, gravely wounded by the blast, jumped into the turret, which was now being splattered with hostile small arms fire, and extinguished the flames, even though burning ammunition was still exploding making his position extremely hazardous. Sergeant Grosse’s extreme gallantry and superb fortitude saved the tank from being totally destroyed and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
