The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Charles Cronenworth, Jr. (ASN: RA-36461229), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, Sergeant Cronenworth’s platoon was pinned down by intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. He repeatedly exposed himself to the deadly hail of bullets by moving about and organizing a section of his platoon as a base of fire thus permitting the remainder of the company to move to a position of safety. When the order to withdraw to more tenable positions was received, Sergeant Cronenworth again displayed courage, initiative, and presence of mind, by organizing his platoon to bring up the rear of the company, personally serving as rear guard. During the bitter battle that followed, he was painfully wounded in the stomach, face and arm, but disregarding his wounds, he continued to lead his men, refused medical aid, and insisted that the others be treated first, until it became necessary to remove him to the aid station. Sergeant Cronenworth’s extreme gallantry, courage, and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
