Headquarters, U.S. Forces, Pacific, General Orders No. 243 (October 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] French O. Crisp (ASN: 34113489), United States Army, for gallantry in action in Luzon, Philippine Islands, from 11 to 20 December 1941. Assigned to the 803d Engineer Battalion, Private Crisp courageously operated heavy construction equipment at Del Carmen Field, Luzon, while subjected to daily bombing and strafing attacks by the enemy. On one occasion, when 54 enemy planes attacked and dropped bombs on the field, he refrained from taking cover and gallantly took what measures he could to safeguard the vitally needed equipment. By his conspicuous bravery and consistently splendid performance of duty under hazardous enemy attacks, Private Crisp aided greatly in keeping the strategic airfield in continuous operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
