The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William Burton Crary (ASN: 0-27839), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on Maekok Ridge, Korea, on 11 August 1950. On 10 August 1950, Company B, in an attack on Cloverleaf Ridge lost its company commander, and command was assumed by Lieutenant Crary. On that evening, orders were received directing that Company B attack and seize Maekok Ridge and hold it at all costs. At 0530 hours, 11 August 1950, Company B under the command of Lieutenant Crary launched an all out attack to seize the ridge. The enemy in this vicinity were well dug in and the whole area was covered by pre-planned artillery and mortar fire. In the face of intense enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire, Lieutenant Crary, at great risk to himself, directed both heavy mortar fire and 81-mm. mortar fire upon the enemy. It was by his cool and accurate adjustment of these fires that Company B was able to seize its objective with a minimum of delay and loss of personnel. Lieutenant Crary’s courageous action on this occasion is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
