The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Olie P. Clapp (ASN: RA-6264780), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy Korea. On 22 August 1950 near Chinju, Korea, a numerically superior enemy force penetrated the perimeter of an infantry company, isolating the platoon with which Master Sergeant Clapp was serving. Despite the deadly barrage of small arms and automatic weapons fire, he moved about the positions encouraging his men and directing their fire. Skillfully deploying his men, he led them in an attack to join the remainder of the company. When the position became untenable and displacement was ordered, he remained to assist in the treatment and evacuation of the wounded, withdrawing only when the company had reached safety. Master Sergeant Clapp’s notable courage, intrepid leadership and devotion to his comrades reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
