The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James W. Craig (ASN: US-52119586), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 25 July 1952, Corporal Craig, an automatic rifleman, was in position on the listening post on outpost “Kelly”, near Koyangdae, Korea, when the enemy attacked in estimated company strength. Because of limited visibility, the foe was able to get very close to the listening post before beginning the assault. Corporal Craig’s leg was hit and broken by the initial bursts of hostile fire but, unflinchingly, he pulled himself up to the top of the trench and while supporting himself on his other leg, placed a withering hail of fire on the onrushing foe. Although automatic weapons fire and concussion grenades were falling all around him, Corporal Craig disregarded his imminent danger and intense pain as he continued firing magazine after magazine of ammunition at the assaulting enemy. When it became apparent that the small friendly force could not withstand the overwhelming enemy assault, the order was given to withdraw. Realizing that he was helplessly wounded and unable to withdraw, Corporal Craig calmly remained at his position, spraying the surrounding terrain with a lethal hail of automatic weapons fire, until two comrades came and carried him to an evacuation point. Corporal Craig’s unselfish devotion to duty and outstanding gallantry in the face of enemy fire reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
